The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew Series)

This Sunday we will be looking at Matthew 4:12-25, the call of the disciples. This calling of Peter, Andrew, James and John, serves as a stepping stone to the Sermon on the Mount, which begins in ch 5. Before Jesus teaches us, he calls us. During your reading this week, take a look at this text, Matthew 4:12-25, and read through it. In Bible Class we will be talking about the Cost of Discipleship. As you read, think about this question: What did it cost these four fishermen in order to follow Jesus? How does this “cost” of following Jesus impact the way we read the Sermon on the Mount?

Lent Book Recommendation

The Lent season begins Ash Wed 2/18. We will be working through the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7. If you would like some devotional reading along side our study, consider Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s, “The Cost of Discipleship.” Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor and professor. He lived during WWII and was a dissident to the Nazi regime. He wrote this book as a lecture series on the Sermon on the Mount given to his students. We will not be studying the book directly, but will be referencing it and discussing it from time to time in Bible Class. This makes for a nice supplement if you are looking for devotional reading during the 40 days season of our Lord’s passion. Pastor has pre-ordered copies available for $10. Please use the sign up sheet in the entryway or text him to secure a copy. Reimbursements for $10/book can be submitted to the offering plate under “Book Fund”.
